In the biggest game of his career, De Sousa started fast, withstood a fierce comeback and then held his nerve to leave Smith frustrated and still waiting for a maiden televised title, while the dream remains alive for 'The Special One'.

The pair fired in 22 maximums and missed 64 darts at double in a see-saw contest which kicked off Sunday's quarter-finals, but missed darts from Smith in the final two legs allowed De Sousa to clinch the biggest win of his career so far.

The Portuguese thrower had never featured in a contest over this distance, but, aided by Smith's early struggles on the doubles and more surprisingly the count, he forged into an lead to stand halfway towards the finish line.

Having taken until the 10th leg to find his first maximum, Smith put his foot down and a barrage of s launched his comeback with a blistering five-leg burst which included two legs that saw him twice go six darts of the way to a nine-dart finish.

Smith hit the front for the first time at when he took the 19th leg against the De Sousa throw, but to De Sousa's credit he refused to wilt and broke back himself.

When the pair split the next eight legs, including the first three-figure finish of the match landed by Smith, it was effectively a best-of-three contest and when Smith missed chances, The Special One wrapped up a memorable win.

Dimitri Van den Bergh continued his winning run against Nathan Aspinall but only after a last-leg decider handed him a date with James Wade in the last four.

The Belgian has enjoyed a stunning year, culminating in his first major title at the World Matchplay in July, a tournament that he started with a first-round success over The Asp.

Having also beaten the world No 6 in the group stage this week, he added a third high-profile win in the last few months against the same opponent.

He and Paul Nicholson took Australia to the World Cup final but were denied a famous victory against England in a sudden-death shoot-out.

He came back from 1—5 down against Ian White in the quarter-finals to triumph 6—5, saw off Peter Wright 6—4 in the semis, before powering past world number two Michael van Gerwen 6—1 in the final.

In the final Ian White beat Whitlock 6—3. In the quarter-finals of the Masters he let a 7—4 lead turn into an 8—7 defeat against James Wade and walked from the stage before the two had shaken hands; and at the Grand Slam of Darts Ted Hankey slowed Whitlock down and reacted aggressively to the crowd and every good shot to come back from 6—1 down to defeat Whitlock 10—9.

Whitlock didn't lose a set in reaching the quarter-finals of the World Championship and kept his composure when Ian White levelled the match at 4—4, after having been 3—0 and 4—1 down, to win 5—4.

Despite this, Whitlock moved up to third in the world rankings after the tournament. Whitlock was beaten 4—1 by Taylor, before Nicholson overcame Lewis 4—2 to mean a doubles match was required to settle the tie which Australia lost 4—0.

Whitlock missed two darts to beat Ricky Evans 3—0 in the first round of the World Championship and went on to lose six successive legs to be pegged back to 2—2.

Evans took out a finish to win the deciding set by six legs to four and condemn Whitlock to a second successive first round exit in the event.

He then overcame Justin Pipe and Steve West both 6—1 and recovered from 3—0 down against Ronny Huybrechts in the final to win 6—5.

Wade, though, pinned double 16 for a darter and then took out 96 to move up, before a third-dart double two moved him into the last four.

I've played in one or two games before and I know what wins and loses games, and at that point I thought it was enough to keep me in the game, not win me the game.

I'm grateful to still be in the tournament and I'm looking forward to my next game. I've been there and done it and I'm enjoying myself.

Dimitri Van den Bergh edged out Nathan Aspinall in a final-leg shoot-out as he continued his bid to follow up July's World Matchplay triumph with another huge title.

Aspinall played his part in another epic contest, leading at one stage and coming from down to lead , only for Van den Bergh to finish the stronger and claim the game's final two legs.

I lost the first three sessions and went down , but I kept digging in and believing in myself. It's a lesson for me but this week is going very well and I'm playing strong.
